Best Trailer for Your Vintage Car Shipment

The best trailer for exotic or classic car transport is an enclosed trailer. There are two types of trailers carriers use when transporting vehicles: open trailers and enclosed trailers. With uShip, you’re in control, so you can choose what kind of trailer is best for your specific shipment.

Open transport for your vehicles means the carrier will haul your antique auto on a trailer that’s open to the elements. Your car will be exposed to the various weather conditions and the general environment that comes along with transportation. That said, open trailers are more affordable and accessible, making open transport the most common way to ship a car.

While open transport is a cheaper option, enclosed transport to move a classic vehicle is worth it. Enclosed trailers are the best for shipping a vintage car because of the added protection against the elements of the road. Most carriers who specialize in transporting classic or exotic vehicles use an enclosed trailer for this reason.

How Much Does it Cost to Transport a Classic Car?

The cost to transport a classic car depends on the distance, timeframe, and the transportation service that works best for you. On average, it costs $3.38 per mile to ship your car less than 100 miles but costs $1.14 per mile to transport your classic vehicle less than 1000 miles.

When your car is in transit, you’ll be depending on the expertise of your classic car transporter to keep your vintage vehicle safe. Doing some research on your carrier, knowing everything you can about the equipment, and preparing the car will put your mind at ease.

How to Prepare Your Classic or Antique Car for Transport

While classic car haulers know what needs to be done to ensure a safe delivery, there are some things you can do to help prepare your antique car for transportation:

  • Remove all personal belongings (except standard vehicle equipment such as the spare tire and jack).
  • Remove coverings such as spare tire cover, grill cover or car cover.
  • Remove non-built-in, after-market, and custom products (such as: luggage racks, radio interfaces, spoilers, ground effects, fog lights, bumpers, garage door openers, parking passes, and toll tags).
  • Make sure the battery has a full charge and is secure in the mounting bracket.
  • Make sure that the tires are properly inflated.
  • Make sure to repair any leaking or mechanical issues; if you are unable to do so, notify your transporter beforehand.
  • If transporting a convertible, secure the top as tightly as possible
  • Top off all fluids in the car.
  • Run down your gas tank to between ¼ and ½ full.
  • Disconnect, disable or turn off all alarm systems.
  • Fully retract or remove all antennas.
  • Fold down side car mirrors.
