So, we’ve seen a thing or two when it comes to getting Fluffy, Spot or Spike from A to B. We’ve learned that transporting any kind of pet — from various dog and cat breeds to horses to pigs can be a difficult for both pet and owner alike.
Pet Transporter Requirements
As we’ve learned and listened from our shipping customers and service providers, we’ve taken several steps to make it an even safer place to ship your pet and ensure your pet is in capable hands during transport:
When you list your pet for transport on uShip, only experienced transporters are allowed to provide quotes on your listing.
To meet this requirement, uShip requires that they provide proof of past pet shipping experience through references like a validated business website, reviews on Facebook and/or Yelp, a rating through the Better Business Bureau, and a USDA license.
uShip also requires potential pet transport providers to read and agree to our Best Practices for Pet Shipping.
Guidance for Pet Owners
While we have set a high bar for pet transporters, we also provide materials and guidance for pet owners so they can make informed decisions and transport their pet with confidence.

highlights a number of important things to remember before transporting your pet.
Check-up:
Before transport, take your pet to your veterinarian for a check-up and discuss with them your pet’s travel plans.
Age: Transport is stressful, especially on very young or very old pets, potentially causing health problems or for your pet to what to escape We do not recommend transporting pets under 10 weeks of age.
Health:
Any pets with communicable conditions such as kennel cough or fleas should not be transported until they have completed treatment.
Identification: It’s a good idea to have your pet micro-chipped before they travel. Also, take pictures of your pet before they travel and verify that information on their tags is accurate and up-to-date.
Breed:
For dogs, some mastiffs, Pekingese, and bulldogs can more easily be distressed during extreme seasons, especially heat. Himalayan and Persian cat breeds are similarly susceptible. .
Some additional things to bear in mind when it comes to shipping your pet:
Temperature:
We discourage shipping pets in extreme heat. While we request that all of our transporters’ vehicles have proper air conditioning, transporting a pet during the summer time should be avoided when possible.
Food & Medications:
Make sure that your pet has everything they will need for the ride, including food and any special medications. If your animal requires medicine, discuss the proper dosing procedures with your transporter beforehand. You want to be sure the transporter you choose is comfortable administering any medication your pet may need during transport.
Mode of Transportation: Will your pet travel via plane, train, or automobile? Check to ensure you have all the required certifications and/or paperwork for the method(s) of transportation your provider will use.
Travel Kennel:
Kennels and crates are essential to ensuring your pet is safely transported. Make sure your kennel is large enough that your pet can sit, stand, lie down, and turn around comfortably. And consider adding in some extra comfort for your furry friend by lining their kennel with blankets or towels.
