How to Get Freight Quotes

Freight quotes are based on several factors: distance, weight, dimensions, density, value, handling requirements, and how easily your freight can be damaged. Carriers use this information to assign a freight class, which, along with mileage, determines your shipping cost.

WHAT DOES CWT WEIGHT MEAN IN FREIGHT?
CWT stands for “cost per hundredweight” (expressed as $/CWT). Most Less Than Truckload (LTL) shipments are priced by CWT weight, meaning per 100 pounds.

For example, if your 400-pound shipment is priced at $25 per CWT, the base cost would be $100 (excluding extras such as liftgate or residential delivery).

In general:

  • Heavier shipments = lower CWT rate
  • Lighter shipments = higher rate or minimum charge
  • Full truckload (FTL) rates are calculated per mile, often cheaper than pricing by the pound

Knowing your shipment’s CWT weight helps you better estimate your freight quote and find the most cost-effective option.

SURCHARGES AND ACCESSORIES
Your CWT-based freight rate is just the beginning. Many carriers add extra fees, such as:

  • Fuel surcharge (can be up to 25%)
  • Liftgate service
  • Inside or residential delivery
  • Limited access locations

Be sure to include these when estimating your total freight cost.
