Why Pallets?

When shipping freight, carriers typically require your goods to be transported on a pallet. Pallets are portable bases used for freight shipping to transport multiple packaged items or containers.

Sometimes referred to as a skid, this flat structure is cost-effective and highly efficient for the handling, storing, and transporting of goods. The structural foundation increases the ease of transportation and is the preferred method of delivery for many businesses.

Pallets can come in many shapes, sizes, and materials. While standard pallets are 40 inches by 48 inches, they can vary in size. The same applies to the material; while typically wooden, pallets can be made of plastic or metal as well.

Another option for packing freight for shipping is crating. Crating your freight is a good idea if it can be easily damaged during transport. If you don’t want to crate your freight, then you’ll need to palletize it.

Benefits of Pallet Shipping

There are several benefits to shipping freight on pallets, those are:

  • Pallets allow carriers to maximize space inside their trailers
  • Pallets protect your cargo during loading, transit, and unloading
  • Pallets make it quicker and easier for carriers to load and unload freight
  • Pallets keep your freight shipment organized
  • Pallets are stronger than plastic wrappers and cardboard boxes, allowing for heavier items to be stacked on them
  • Every type of pallet used for transport is recyclable. Wood, plastic, and metal can all be recycled

When Pallets Are Right For You

Palletization may be the right choice for you if the following applies to your shipment:

  • Shipping LTL and have high-value cargo
  • Multi-piece shipments that need to remain together
  • You need to minimize the risk of damage
  • Require optimized operations for pallet racks and warehouse storage
  • Desire drainage and circulation for certain commodities
  • Want more ease when moving

Standard Pallet Size for Shipping

The standard size of a shipping pallet is 48” X 40”. In addition, there are two other pallet dimensions to know about: 42” X 42” and 48” X 48”. That said, if you are shipping non-standard palletized freight, you may need to build a custom pallet. For example, shipping furniture as freight may require a pallet that is larger or smaller than the standard size.

Standard Pallet Weight

A standard North American wooden pallet (48” x 40” x 6”) weighs 33 pounds. That said, the weight will vary depending on the type of wood that the pallet is made of. For example, hardwoods, softwoods, or a mix of the two. All things considered, it is best to weigh your loaded pallet prior to shipping for accuracy.

Maximum Pallet Weight Loads

When packing a pallet for shipping, it is important to know how much weight-specific pallet sizes can handle. If you overpack a pallet, you run the risk of damaging your freight. The maximum standard pallet weight loads are:

  • 48″ x 40″ pallets: 4,600 lbs
  • 36″ x 36″ pallets: 4,700 lbs
  • 42″ x 42″ pallets: 3,700 lbs
  • 48″ x 48″ pallets: 3,700 lbs

How to Prepare and Ship Pallets

To ensure that your pallet delivery is successful, pallets need to be properly prepared before transport. The following guidelines should help your shipment go smoothly:

  1. Source an appropriately sized wood or plastic pallet
  2. Containers and boxes should be stacked on the pallet with the heaviest items near the base
  3. Utilize straps, banding, and shrink wrap to keep items secure and together during delivery
  4. Have labels created with complete address information and attach them to the side of the pallet
