My grandmother passed away leaving all of us grandchildren some of the family heirloom furniture that has been a part of our memories for as long as we can remember. The value to us is more in the memories than the dollar value. I needed to get my stuff here to Texas from Seal Beach, Ca.
When pricing everything, including renting a truck we felt that we just wouldn't be able to afford the shipping. 500 pounds of stuff to ship for an average of $2,600 to $3,000 that meant you had to buy all the packing materials, do it your self and hope you did it right. If you drove it yourself add 2 nights in hotels, meals and of course $3.80 per gallon gas and a few missed days of work. The prices were enormous.
Then my wife found U-ship. I asked to ship everything for the price of the cheapest smallest rental truck, minus the gas and the extras. I had a bid that day. We flew out to California and my parents aided with the packing company getting in and packing it up.
They handled everything once they got to my Grandmother's house. They handled everything with respect and care that I am so appreciative for.
We now have those items that are filled with generations of memories in our house where they will be with her great grandchildren and pass on to them one day.
Now consider all of this and add to the mix Hurricane Ike. 2 days after returning Home we get hit by Ike dead center. the stuff is on the road and most of the area is closed. 90% of people have no power or any form of communications. The day the truck was scheduled to arrive Hurricane Ike hit. We expected to wait weeks for the stuff considering all the relief efforts going on.
Our stuff was here only a couple of days after most of the roads had just reopened. Everything was fine and dry. What a relief to not have to worry about that considering all the damage we have to the house and had to live in the dark for almost 2 weeks.
