When I bought an auto manual business in Flint Michigan, I had a rough estimate of manuals from the owner. Once the deal was closed, I decided to rush up there from Akron Ohio with my brother and 82 year old dad in a 24ft rental truck. We must have overloaded the 12,000 lb gross by about 5,000 lbs. and even had to go through the Ohio turnpike toll booth 3 times before I didn't trip the overwight axel warning. I think I only got through the gate by speeding up trying to fool the scale. This only took a small chunk out of the inventory, though. Figuring gas, expenses, and the time it took to load and unload, I concluded my time would be better spent getting the books ready to be shelved and went to Uship to try and get a bid on shipping down the rest of the inventory. I figured it would be about 40,000 to 70,000 pounds of books, but that was only a guess. I also put in the bid that they would be boxed. I had a few prospects and then Shannon Ashbaker bid on the job. He said he was in the Flint area and was a mason contractor, heavy equipment mover and operator looking for some pickup work to keep his equipment working with the slow Michigan economy. I had a few other bids, but accepted Shannon's when he offered to transport the books in a 53 foot dry trailer with a 50,000 weight capacity. We agreed on a price and he showed up on the loading day with his brother in law and a crew the former owner had assembled. I had put in the listing "boxed manuals", but the former owner had the idea to loose stack the books and put boxes on top of them when the books reached about 4 feet. Shannon could have called off the deal, but as he later said, sometimes being a nice guy has its downside. They loaded the trailer for a day and half and ended up with 49,000 lbs on shrinkwrapped pallets, which turned into a real timesaver on the offload with a rented forklift. Now if I could find a great service like Uship to organize the books on shelves, I would be all set!
