I was going to rent a U-Haul and drive my one-bedroom worth of stuff to Florida from NYC, but the cost for the rental alone was $1,600 plus gas and insurance---about $2,300. I searched the internet for options---first on Craigslist under "movers," where one kind soul told me to check out Uship.com.
Honestly, I was wary of the whole thing at first, but when I poked aorund the site and looked at feedback and ratings and everything I thought it was just as trustworthy as EBay---and I use that site all the time. So I posted my listing and was suprprised when I got four offers in a matter of hours---and they were a fraction of what it would cost to drive down there myself. I settled on one bid (only $625) offer after checking the company out online, and that was all it took. Larry showed up on the day of the move at the exact time he said he would, and drove that semi in NYC like it was a taxi, pulling up to my apartment building and parking it so perfectly you couldn't fit a credit card between the tire and the curb. Even my building's superintendent was impressed---and he's a jerk! Anyway, it was a perfect experience from start to finish. My things arrived on time and in perfect shape (the movers took special care of a few very fragile items for me, too). I've been preaching the gospel of Uship to anyone who would listen ever since---there was a small technical glitch on their Web site during my bidding, and their tech department dealt with it immediately and effectively. I just can't say enough good things about them. I hope I never have to move again, but if I do it's nice to know that companies like Uship and Dependable-Pro Movers are there for me if I need them.
