My Uship mover, Diane Taylor, moved our 3-bedroom household from Virginia to Texas at a price less than half that of normal movers. She was also more flexible. When we updated the inventory to include more furniture and boxes than she originally bid on, she added a trailer to the truck to accommodate us. She also used technology (cell phone and WAN-based laptop for email) effectively to stay in good communication throughout the move. Two lessons learned worth sharing for those considering household moves: 1) Be thorough with the inventory. Had we not updated the inventory with the missing items in time, Ms. Taylor would have had to rent a trailer in the local Washington DC area where they cost twice as much. 2) Trailers are much tougher on furniture than trucks on a long distance haul. Trailers lack the shocks to cushion the ride as well as trucks. All of the items that arrived with rub damage were in the trailer. Some lamps had their screws shaken loose. So, if you need to augment your load with a trailer, consider heavy duty wrapping. Be sure your nicest furniture shipped on a truck.
