I needed to move some Antique Wormy Chestnut Barnwood Siding from a small specialty lumber supplier in the mountains of Western North Carolina to my custom Millwork business, nordecor.com, in Northern Minnesota. This stuff is difficult to ship as it's old and gnarly stuff - not like shipping a pack of 2x8 lumber. As I wasn't shipping a full-truckload of this wood, and I only needed to ship about 7500 lbs, it called for a specialty flatbed LTL solution. I had heard about Hot Shots, basically a hidden network of independent truckers that have small vans, enclosed or flatbed trailers. They haul freight too small for a semi load and too big for a package courier. Long length lumber is very difficult to ship through standard LTL freight lines because it can't be loaded into the back of a van with a forklift. It has to be forklifted from the side onto a flatbed rig of some sort. So I started some searches on the Web with Google and discovered first the uShip.com site. Then I registered and posted my first shipping request looking for one of these Hot-shots I had heard about. WOW! Got bids within a few hours, and one in particular fit the bill perfectly - D. Goldbloom, a guy from Virginia with a 20' flatbed trailer that he pulls behind a 1 ton pickup truck. Just the right size rig and was able to pickup and deliver just as we needed. This saved us about $700 as compared to booking a full-truckload carrier, our only other feasible alternative that could get the material here safely and on-time. Great experience. uShip.com is now on my short-list of shipping options.
