Over the summer, a CNN Money article ran that\u00a0was titled “Tons of trucking jobs…that nobody wants.<\/a>“<\/strong> It basically\u00a0claimed that during tough economic times with high unemployment, \u00a0Americans\u00a0should be jumping at the chance to work \u2013 including trucking, but that with a\u00a0driver shortage, it seems it’s a job nobody wants.<\/p>\n True, there is a shortage of drivers in the industry. But, a job nobody wants!?\u00a0 Bullship!<\/p>\n Every week I’ve got many people calling and emailing me wanting to know how to get in on it \u2013 they just want the play book\u00a0on what it takes and how they can make good money hauling stuff for people and\u00a0businesses.<\/p>\n That’s what I’ll be focused on in this\u00a0“On the Marc<\/a>” blog post series I’m doing with uShip. I\u2019ll explain\u00a0exactly what it takes to get into and succeed as a professional Owner Operator today.<\/p>\n A few years ago, before I was cast on the A&E real-life series Shipping Wars<\/em><\/a>, I was “that\u00a0guy.” I was the classic dude in this scenario. I had no idea exactly<\/em> what it would\u00a0take to jump into trucking, but I knew it was something I wanted to explore. I knew that driving trucks and hauling people’s property was something I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to do it and would enjoy seeing the U.S. and Canada (Here’s a video of me at Mt. Rushmore<\/a>).<\/p>\n And I realized, “Holy crap,\u00a0people will pay me to haul their stuff and I can make a great living and be working for myself.”\u00a0 So, really, this business is part of living\u00a0the American dream to me.<\/p>\n When I talk to guys (and gals!) who want\u00a0to get into truck driving, I hear “me” on the other end of the phone\u00a0or in the tone of the email: Eager. Unsure. Looking for guidance and answers.\u00a0 I think these people know the answers, but want confirmation that this is doable and can be profitable.<\/p>\n Let’s make no mistake here — you have to be smart to be successful.\u00a0 It’s very easy to not do well in this business if you are not careful.\u00a0 With that being said, remember this:\u00a0 do it right from the start. Shortcuts are not going to get you there.\u00a0 Keep it legal and safe. Work smarter, not harder.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n When new business owners come to me for\u00a0advice, I believe what they\u2019re really asking is \u201cIs it lucrative?\u201d, \u201cWhat’s it\u00a0going to take to get into this business?\u201d and \u201cWhere do I focus my money to get I’ll be sharing all the steps involved.
