Additionally, as of March 13, 2026, we resolved a bug that caused orders to pull incorrect origin location contact info.

Best practices for onboarding and troubleshooting

To keep your fulfillment process efficient and accurate, we recommend following these standard operating procedures:

Use the built-in listing tools

We strongly recommend using the “Auto Listing” or “Create a Listing” tools to send your orders to uShip. Manually listing is slower and increases the risk of human error, such as forgetting to add a uShip Protection Plan that a customer already paid for.

How to use the Create a Listing tool:

Go to the Orders page in Shopify.

Check the box next to the relevant orders.

Click the three dots at the top of the table.

Scroll down to the Apps section.

Select Create uShip Listing.

Click Create.

Product pricing and variant settings

Pricing: All items marked as a Physical Product require a price to successfully return a shipping rate.

Variants and custom orders: If you sell items with variants or offer custom order items, you must use metafields to fetch their dimensions. Be sure to set these dimensions directly in the variant metafields.

Physical vs. non-physical variants: The only variant you should mark as a Physical Product is the one containing the product dimensions. All other non-physical product metafields (like color, stitching, or materials) must be marked as Not Physical Product. You can toggle this off directly on the product details page.

Questions about metafields? Setting up variants can be tricky. If you have any questions about configuring these metafields, please reach out to our API Enablement Specialist at apisupport@uship.com for direct assistance.

Handling heavy items over 200 lbs

Shipping heavy equipment and large items requires a bit of extra care. While we’re actively working to improve our pricing tables, we recommend the following interim steps for heavy freight:

Move heavy items into their own dedicated shipping profile.

Apply a 40 percent markup handling fee to the rate to offset any additional costs and ensure you aren’t losing money on shipping.

If you prefer to handle these large shipments manually, use the heavy rates IHD portal to list your items. Please reach out to your Customer Success Managers (Sabrina or Yvette) if you need the direct link.

Setting up backup shipping rates

We work to make sure our service is always available. During occasional maintenance windows, rate requests might briefly pause. To prevent low backup rates from showing at checkout during these short periods, we highly recommend setting up custom backup rates based on product weight.

Backup shipping rates are managed directly within your Shopify setup.
