Additional Information: Looking for someone flying out of Japan in August/September to bring back Akita pup with them. Our airline (now that we booked our tickets) does not allow transport of animals under 6 months. Will prepay expenses and meet you in any US city. It's just a LOT cheaper to have someone bring dog out of country as excess baggage than booking separate flight for pup alone. Prefer cities of LA, SFO, Chicago, etc. We live in Houston. This is probably a long shot but let us know! Report a Violation

Questions for this shipment:

Question: How many pounds does your puppy weigh? I can bring him in the passenger cabin of the aircraft in an airline approved pet carrier. No lonely cargo bins for him! He would be well cared for, safety and comfort my top priority. Though depending on his size it is necessary to find out how big he is. If he is too big he cannot ride in the cabin :( However, I could still do the shipment, he would have to go in the cargo hold. (8/23/2009)
Question: Also, I would be able to deliver him to Houston (IAH). Would this airport work for you? (8/23/2009)
Response: IAH would be perfect. When will you be going to Japan? The puppy will be too big to go in the cabin but air cargo would be fine (cost is usually minimal...just the price of extra baggage). Let me know your fees & time schedule. (8/23/2009)
Response: You really don't think he would fit in a large airline approved pet carrier? My pet carrier says it can hold up to 22lbs. I am looking into what my airline would charge for him as baggage if I fly with him. Are your drop off locatins flexible? I was thinking of dropping him off at IAH but another airport such as LAX, MSP, SfO, or SEA would be more convenient. How would you get there? (8/23/2009)
Question: Ok, my apologies, according to your post he weighs 15 lbs. That would work fine! However, I know you said it was less then 6 months old, did it get its rabies vaccine and do you have documents to prove this? Please look at this website for the details I am adhering too. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal/dogs.htm Also, this is the pet carrier I will be placing him in, do you think he will fit inside? Large - 20"L X 11.75"W X 11.5"H - Black - Soft-Sided http://www.petco.com/product/8232/Sherpa-Roll-Ups.aspx (8/23/2009)
Response: This was the situation... we went & spent the summer in Japan visiting my husbands family. We wanted to bring an akita puppy back with us but our airline (singapore) would not transport the breed. In addition there was an embargo with many airlines against transporting pets during the summer. Given that no one responded to our post we thought it was a mute point. We are now back in the United States. We would still love to have a puppy sent to us and can contact the breeders over there to see what they have available... typically an akita puppy at 8 weeks weighs about 15 lbs but would be closer to 20 lbs by 12 weeks. At this young of an age there wouldn't be any rabies vaccinations given. To answer your other question, I could meet you at SFO & LAX to receive the puppy and then fly back to IAH. The carrier you mentioned would probably be too small for an akita puppy as they are quite big even at 8-12 weeks. But I don't mind the puppy going in cargo as I've shipped dogs around the world (8/23/2009)
Response: A general certificate of health is not required by CDC for entry of pet dogs into the United States, although some airlines or states may require them. However, pet dogs are subject to inspection at ports of entry and may be denied entry into the United States if they have evidence of an infectious disease that can be transmitted to humans. If a dog appears to be ill, further examination by a licensed veterinarian at the owner's expense might be required at the port of entry. Proof of Rabies Vaccination: Dogs must have a certificate showing they have been vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days prior to entry into the United States. These requirements apply equally to service animals such as Seeing Eye dogs. Importation of Unvaccinated Dogs: Dogs not accompanied by proof of rabies vaccination, including those that are too young to be vaccinated (i.e. less than 3 months of age), may be admitted if the importer completes a confinement agreement (see below) and confines (8/24/2009)
Question: My dates for shipment are flexible, I have yet to book my ticket to the states. What would work best for you? I am not sure of my fee yet. Once I find out how much my airline is going to charge me, Delta/Northwest, I will let you know. (8/23/2009)
Question: I work for the Airline and am based out of Minneapolis. I was going to fly to Narita and pick him up. Its free to have him in the cabin, and $230 to check him with me. Who would be meeting me at the airport to check the dog? How much did your airline want to charge you to ship him? I am trying to figure out how much I should charge you considering It will take me about 3 days round trip, from Minneapolis to NRT, NRT to LAX, LAX to IAH. (8/23/2009)
Response: These were the quotes that I got from a pet shipper out of Tokyo. The charges were so outrageous that we decided (prior to receiving your email) that my husband would probably fly to Tokyo to pick the puppy up (once a puppy was located). Some of these charges will still apply, most will not. Export customs clearance (approx. $59.) Terminal charge - might not be charged ($94.50), Quarantine (if necessary--probably won't be) $120., Bonded area truckage (not needed) $150. Agency fee(not needed) $250. Airfreight charge $1073. I've had dogs shipped to me from Australia, Taiwain, and Canada and none of them had the outrageous fees of Japan. Also, do you know Japanese at all in order to talk with someone or get the veterinary clearance at the airport --I know all dogs going commercial as cargo need to pass through the veterinarian as outgoing cargo prior to departure? (8/23/2009)
Response: This is dizzying using uships' message system! are you on facebook by any chance? (8/24/2009)
Question: I'm only allowed 1,000 letters to type to you, I don't think it will be as costly as what the Japanese shippers are charging, my main concerns would be to make sure I have all the documents I need to get him through customs. I have dealt with shipping cats from Russia to the US and am pretty familiar with the process. As for the airline I will make sure to do all my research and be prepared for any fees that they may have. (8/24/2009)
Response: Yes, I do have facebook... Jennifer Chatham in Houston... I'm the one in a black blazer with black necklace (work photo). I will have my husband start to locate a puppy In Japan over the next couple of days. (8/26/2009)
