Questions for this shipment:

Question: I am an Equipment Repair Supervisor with Los Angeles Fire Department. I do odd hauling jobs on the side to create work opportunities for my teen age sons. I am a jouney level heavy duty equipment mechanic with tools and I am California Fire Mechanic certified. If this crown will start and run, I can make it "road worthy" - i.e. lights and brakes, and drive it to Bakersfield on a California Dept. of Motor Vehicles one trip permit. I will have my son follow me in a chase vehicle in case of break downs and for my transportation back to Southern California. Please let me know if my proposal to drive it to Bakersfield is workable for you. I am flexible on dates and times and am eager to submit a competive bid and earn your positive feedback. Best regards, Mark Clark - Whittier, CA. (9/16/2009)
Response: Mark, I failed to mention that the truck is in operatable. I believe it was taken to a parade and ran for an exsessive amount of hours which caused some lower engine damage. As of right now the truck needs to be low boyd from castaic to bakersfield for a new engine repower. I wish it was something easily fixed so it can be driven but I need a mechanic's time and effort to get it road worthy. Thanks for your interest. (9/16/2009)

Response: Mark, I took some thought into your purposal and as we sit right now the truck is waiting for the proper shipment I can afford to make this work. We have a donated diesel motor for the truck but as we have been told all the truck needs is an inframe job done on the motor because there was a small amount of metal shavings in the oil pan. I Know you said you were a mechanic is this something your capable of doing or is that out of your range? Do advise? Also I have a truck that we use for donation work thats an X-LA city tiller truck. Would you happen to have some information about such an item? (10/24/2009)
Response: I have worked for LAFD for 15 years. I was fortuneate to come on board when we were still using Hall Scott powered Crown Triples!!! In addition to my experience with Hall Scott, I worked on our repowered Crown fire engines which we converted from Hall Scott engines to Cummins Diesel engines, and all of our Seagrave fire engines and ladder trucks from model year 1970 - 1996. I have been a fleet repair supervisor now for 8 1/2 years - and yes I have much information on all of our ex LA City Rigs. An in frame overhaul on your existing engine would be much less complicated than swapping the engine out. What is your ultimate objective? You say you have metal in the oil pan. What kind of engine do you have? If it is not seized up it can probably be fixed, but this is not cheap. You are talking several thousand dollars to do an inframe engine overhaul or several thousand dollars to do an engine swap. Continued on next message. (10/25/2009)
Question: Hello, I need a couple accurate measurements from you please. 1st if from the ground to the bottom of the front bumper or lowest point @ front of vehicle. 2nd is over all height, is 11 feet accurate? Please let me know those 2 measurments and I'll submit a bid. Thanks,Brian/CTC79. (9/16/2009)
Response: Sorry for the late response. I do not have access of getting measurements of the truck as it is actually located south of my home town. When I make a trip down that way I will gladly get measurements and try and mail you back with them for your needs. Thanks for your patience. (10/26/2009)
Question: Sir, we move fire trucks for many of the manufactures here in So.California. American LaFrance SeaGRave to name a few. We transport for LAFD,LACOFD,VCFD. RFD to name a few. Check us out and see our pictures. Tony3@tandk (9/17/2009)
Question: you declined our bid lets see if we can get close to where you need to be..tony3 (9/18/2009)
Response: Tony, Reason being we declined your bid is because we operate on 0 budget and arent fire department affiliated. We are a non-profit organization and we provide these trucks to the community to help raise funds to help children of california with what ever delima they may encounter. Because were non profit we have to work with what volunteers are able to provide to operate these trucks fuel, maintenance, and other needs as nessissary and as the truck shut down on its way back to Bakersfield from a non-profit event it put us and the operators in a bind to figuring out how were getting it home. Best offer were reciving so far is $90 per hour with a 3 hour minnimum and a 3 hour donation time included. The ball is in your hands. (9/18/2009)
Response: If my company was not struggling like so many other's in California because of what you do I would do it for No Charge. I am not in the postion at this time due to the economy to do so. My travel to you and back from Bakersfield is abot 3.5 hours. I have to pay the fuel and the driver. I hope you can understand my position. If I can help you at a later date please contact us. Thank you for what you do for the Kids...Tony3@tandk (9/18/2009)
Response: Can you give me a accurate price? We have a bulldozer that will push the truck onto your trailer and a forklift that will pull it off once we arrive in bakersfield. Its a team effort so ill have to meet you there and help out loading and unloading the truck but I need to know what the actual cost is going to before we confirm on this shipment. I would like to have it moved before the end of the week if the price is what you said it would be. (11/3/2009)
Response: We can do this for you thursday or friday prefer friday. We will not need the bulldozer as we have a winch to winch it on. Our price will be 1100.00 that will include the permit if needed and is due to the recent 36 cent spike in diesel fuel. please let me know if we need to adjust anything..tony3 please check us out on FMCSA website to get info and autorities.. (11/3/2009)
Question: What happened to the towing company that was going to haul this for free?????? (10/13/2009)
Question: Well here you are again. What is this going to take to get you to move this. This is not a cheap move and nobody is going to do it for free. What is the price range you are looking at ???? please answer (10/24/2009)
Response: Hello Tony, Were not in a major hurry to move this truck at the current moment as its a very budgeted move and we have standing offer's of movement as a donation shipment. We have 2 carriers out of bakersfield , 1 out of fresno and 1 out of los angeles that will donate a 1 way trip for the truck if they have a back hual and can route the proper direction without extra work. If we had a budget to work with i would have submitted an offer but at the moment were waiting on our sponsors to follow up with this move. Thanks for your time. (10/24/2009)
Response: my question then Is way are you re newing the post. I would love to move it put fuel is again 3.00 a gallon and driver pay is 25.00 an hour.. Thank you .If we can help please let me know.... tony (10/24/2009)
Response: keeping our options open and being were getting quite a bit of offers I like the choice's we have to choose from. Thanks for your interest. (10/24/2009)
Question: To roll in a set of main bearings shouldn't be that complicated and this might be all you need to restore oil pressure and drive it home. This should be too expensive, but it will do nothing for worn pistons and rings or cam and cam bearings, etc. And if it has many major oil leaks or worn valve train, this too would not benefit from replacing rod and main bearings. Does the engine turn over? Does it have oil in it? Did oil and coolant mix? Was the engine overheated? Does it or was it "knocking" before you shut it down? Can it be towed by a wrecker or does the ladder stick out the front too far? Maybe it could be towed from the rear. If it was me and I could make it run, I would drive it to the shop of my choice and then do every repair needed to make it reliable. If it won't run, then I would pay to have it trucked on a low boy. What shop are you thinking of using in Bakersfield? Have you thought about taking it a shop in the LA area? (10/25/2009)
Response: To be honest I dont know what's wrong with the truck all I know is when I got it, it had the oil pan off and there was rumor of metal shaving's in the pan which I dont know are from and a mechanic in my face stating the truck needs a inframe job. Where i stand with the truck becuase were using it as a donation truck to support any kids ran events in sothern california, Make a wish , Alisa Anne , and what ever else that pertain's to kids and having a clean neat fire truck there. We were donated a cummins diesel motor and that diesel motor is sitting in bakersfield in a shop waiting for the crown to make it that location. We had a shipper donate his truck and time to move the truck but he's under the impression his lowboy cant haul the rig because of the heigh and how low the body of the truck sits. All I know is I am waiting to meet with the shipper sometime in the next couple weeks in Castiac where the truck is located. I dont know the rules or what not but we need to talk on a phone (10/26/2009)
Question: To answer your question about doing an in frame, I certainly can do this work but I do not have a shop to work in and I have limited time for a project this big. Would you like me to submit a bid to drain and refill the engine oil, attempt to make this engine run, evaluate it's condition to see if it is safe to drive, put a CA DMV 1 trip permit in the window & drive it to Bakersfield? I would only do this IF the vehicle is safe and passes a DOT check (i.e. brakes, steering, lights, etc) - the engine issues not withstanding. If the engine cranks over and will run and it is not knocking and it carries oil pressure I wouldn't worry to much about the small amount of metal on the oil plug. Grant it, large amounts of metal or metal chunks are a different story. I grew up in the trucking business and we were always buying and selling old trucks that were down on their beam's end. With a little finesse, I was always able to make them run and get them home unless the engine was blown. (10/25/2009)
Response: Mark Clark, I recently took a drive up to Castaic where my truck is now store'd and waiting to be either repaired or moved. I was able to talk to the mechanic and it is determined that the Crown Quint that I have will start and run with batterys that I have here at my home in bakersfield. The truck does not have oil pressure which is the problem and thats the reason they pulled the oil pan off and trying to see if there were any serious indicators of damage in the oil. The mechanic said he thinks it may be a spun bearing or something along them lines. Here's my delima. If I can get the truck fixed on the spot that's where the truck is going to stay until I am ready to use it for business and make room for it at home. If you can figure out what could possibly be the problem for the truck to not have oilpressure then that would be great. If you want to give me some idea or pointers and maybe we can arrange something to work out in this deal. (11/5/2009)
Response: I would put the oil pan back on, fill it with oil, hook up an MANUAL oil pressure gauge and start the engine and confirm that the engine does or does not have oil pressure based on a known good oil pressure gauge. It is not common for a Diesel engine to lose oil pressure unless there is a catastrophic engine failure - i.e. ran without oil, engine overspeed, etc. Far more common is for an electric oil pressure gauge to malfunction or for an oil pressure signal line to get obstructed. What kind of engine is in this truck? (11/6/2009)
Response: The engine is a Detroit 8v not sure of the series but almost certain its a 92 series. I talked with a friend of mine who's a mechanic who's donating his time and effort to exchange the motor if needed. But that's the challenge to get the motor from castaic to bakersfield for a motor exchange or fix the motor were its located and leave it until needed because that's where the truck will volunteer its time in parade's,and fundraisers for non-profit org's. (11/6/2009)
Question: Does this truck have a manual transmission or an automatic transmission? It probably takes six group 31 12 volt batteries. You could probably get by with 3 batteries to get it started, but these are about $60.00 each. For $200.00 I will evaluate the rig to see if it can be started and driven safely. This would include installing your batteries and any other essential parts, fuel, etc. that you have. And if it is a go, I will drive it there for $150.00. This would be an all day project, but good experience for my boys. If $350.00 is within your budget I will submit a bid - $200.00 to evaluate it and prep it for moving and $150.00 to drive it to Bakersfield. I will not charge for the delivery if it cannot be driven. This is just a proposal. Obviously, the more we chat, the more I will know about this rig and my formal bid will be based on everything I learn about this job. Best regards, Mark Clark (10/25/2009)
Question: HI. IF THE TOTAL HIGHT IS BELOW 10'3", AND THERE IS A WAY TO LOAD IT, I CAN HAUL IT FOR YOU. SINCE YOU ARE NONPROFIT I'LL CHARGE 200.00 PLUS FUEL AND FEES. I DO NOT HAVE A WINCH, BUT I HAVE 16' RAMPS. (10/31/2009)
Response: Hello, As far as the exact height of the truck I am not 100% sure on that. I am going to take a drive down to castaic here in the next couple weeks and will confirm for your shipping needs. I do know that shipping the truck up the high way wont be a freeway bridge issue as long as its under 15' and I have a friend at the CHP who told me they could help us out finding the right route thats safe and efficent and wont cause no delays. Because were non profit our budget is at $0 and were hoping a good faith moved with maybe a barter or something could workout with this deal. Though its a very expensive move I am sure I can take $200 out of my pocket to support your efforts. I would need to know what the fuel and fee's would be to haul this truck 75 miles north to bakersfield? If you can give me a round about on that it will better help us figure out if we can make this happen or not. (10/31/2009)
Response: HI, I'LL DONATE THE TRUCKING, IF I CAN LEGALLY TRANSPORT IT. IF NEEDED, I'LL HAVE TO GET A PERMIT.MY BOTTOM DECK IS LONG ENOGH TO GET IT ON. YOU WILL HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO LOAD IT. I DO HAVE 16' RAMPS THAT ARE GOOD FOR 20,000 LBS PER AXLE. SO THAT SCHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM. IF YOU WANT, I'LL PUT IN THE BID AS A DONATION. THEN WE CAN FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET IT LOADED. I LOADED A SM MOTORHOME ONCE PULLING IT UP THE RAMP WITH A SKIPLOADER. IF WE CAN GET IT DONE THIS WEEK, THAT WOULD BE GR8. I'M VERY BUSY THE NEXT 2 WEEKS. THANKS, HANS H.B. TRUCKING,TEHACHAPI,CA (11/1/2009)
Response: We can legally transport the truck I am told and I was told we could even be helped with a sufficent route. I need to make verbal contact with you reguarding this matter so I can allow you to submit your bid before we make final arrangements. [email address removed]. I can send you more picture's of the truck if you would like that will better help you understand what were moving. (11/2/2009)
