HTTP://WWW.FMCSA.DOT.GOV/SAFETY-SECURITY/ETA/PART390.HTM, this federal government regulation states that over 10,000 lbs. combination, which is vehicle gross sticker weight and trailer gross sticker weight (sticker weight is what the manufacturer puts on the label as the maximum weight allowed), at that weight rating transporters need both MC# & DOT#. That is not the scale weight of truck and boat but the sticker gross weight. State DOT officers have authority to shut down non-DOT compliant transporters where stopped.
