How to Sort & Pack Your Kitchen

Sort and use food

The most obvious task when cleaning out your kitchen is to use up food. If you are not moving to a home nearby, eat or throw away all perishable foods. Donate canned goods to a food bank. There is no need to move heavy cans when they can be replaced inexpensively.

Lighter, more expensive food items can be boxed and moved. For example, it is difficult and expensive to replace a spice collection, so pack your spices in a small, waterproof box. Baking supplies, oils, and vinegars should be packed in small boxes and stored in a dry place until the day of your move.

Most moving companies will not transport open bottles of alcohol or propane tanks, so now is the time to have a goodbye barbecue or cocktail party. If you are moving with alcohol, follow our guide to packing wine and liquor.

Pack pots, pans, and dishes

Pare down your kitchen supplies to the absolute essentials. Any pots, pans, or utensils that you do not use frequently should be sold or given away. Follow our guides to packing pots and pans and packing small appliances to make sure that your cookware arrives at your new home undamaged.

Next, pack a “kitchen essentials” box for the first few days after you move. This should have some non-perishable foods (pasta, canned sauce, etc.), basic cookware, cleaning supplies, and rags.

Set aside dishes and silverware for each member of your family, then pack your plates, stemware and glasses. Make sure to label these boxes “FRAGILE” and store them somewhere safe until the day of your move. Expensive china, silver, or crystal should travel in your car during the move; do not put sentimental or valuable items in a moving truck.

Prepare major appliances for the move

Finally, prepare your major kitchen appliances. Clean your appliances and disconnect them at least 24 hours in advance. Check your manual or consult your mover if you have any questions about preparing your large appliances for transport.
