Shipping Warehouse Equipment and Shop Tools: Things to Know

For a warehouse or shop, industrial equipment represents a hefty investment. Whether you elect to purchase pre-owned warehouse equipment to save on cost or need to move your shop equipment to a new location, transportation is a critical part of this process. You should carefully research an equipment transporter and determine their qualifications and experience, depending on your shipping needs. Also, taking a few minutes to prepare your shipment will speed up the process and save you money.

  1. Almost all warehouse or shop equipment will need to be palletized or crated for transport. You can have this done, or request your service provider to include this service in the shipping quote.
  2. Determine if the equipment should also be shrink-wrapped or have additional protection against shipping damage – for example, cast iron is quite fragile (it can be brittle) and measures should be taken to protect it accordingly.
  3. Communicate with your service provider before and during the transit process. For example, determine if the origin and destination have loading docks if they are required, and pass this information onto the truck driver – the more information, the better.
  4. Further information on this and will vary by the type of shop equipment, but general guidelines include:
    • Securing moving parts, such as handles, adjusters, or pulleys.
    • Emptying fuel tanks for equipment such as welders.
    • Closing valves on fuel or hydraulic lines.
  5. Find out what kind of insurance is included in your shipping quote, and whether you have the option to purchase additional insurance if required.
