How to Ship Textiles
Many textile shipments are international and subject to trade agreements, tariffs, and a lot of paperwork. That is a very complicated subject and a quick overview can be found here. This guide is focused on transporting textiles within the United States.
Transporting Textiles
When you are preparing the textiles and picking a transporter, consider the following.
- Properly Packing the Textiles – Will the textiles fit in a standard box? Will you need to create a box/crate? Safe transport of textiles is important and begins with the packaging.
- Insurance and Authority – Does your textile transporter have a USDOT and MC number? How much insurance do they carry? Do you need more coverage?
- Time Frame – How quickly do you need the textiles shipped? Does the transporter fit your time frame?
- Climate Control – Is your fabric sensitive to moisture or heat? Does your transporter offer a climate controlled transport?
- Customer Service – How well does your transporter communicate? Ask for references and if you want to know more check with the Better Business Bureau to see what customers think.
Of the above list, time frame and proper packing are the most important when shipping textiles business to business. Remember, choosing the right transporter for your textiles could be the difference between a smooth shipment and a migraine.
