April 2009 TPI Figures Released

The Transportation Price Index (TPI) remained steady in April, dropping just $0.02 to $2.05 per ton-mile. The TPI is down 3.75% from its $2.13/TM level in April 2008. The freight category showed the biggest jump, rising 16.3% to $0.50/TM, followed by the motorcycle category, which rose 9.4% to $1.40/TM. The cost of shipping household goods dropped 6.9% to $2.71/TM. The price of diesel fuel has remained fairly level over the past four months and dropped just $0.02 to $2.20/gallon in April.

The TPI uses proprietary information from actual transactions taking place on the uShip.com site to provide aggregate and categorical pricing figures expressed in US dollars per ton-mile. The TPI is released on a monthly basis and was designed by uShip to track important data related to transportation costs.

March 2009 TPI Figures Released

The Transportation Price Index (TPI) fell 13.75% in March to $2.07 per ton-mile. That is 6.33% below its $2.21/TM level in March 2008. The boats category was one of the bigger movers again, dropping nearly 6% to $0.49/TM. The cost of freight shipping also showed significant movement, dropping more than 12%. Meanwhile, the price of diesel fuel rose 3.7% in March to $2.22/gallon but remains far below last year's level.

February 2009 TPI Figures Released

The Transportation Price Index (TPI) fell 2.46% in February to $2.38. It has risen 4.39% from $2.28 in February of last year. The boats category showed the greatest movement this month, rising more than 10% to $0.52 ahead of the summer boat season. The price of diesel fuel, which leveled off in January, continued to fall in February, dropping 6.58% to $2.13/gallon. Diesel fuel prices are now down more than 40% since February 2008.

January 2009 TPI Figures Released

The Transportation Price Index (TPI) dropped 6.54% in January to $2.43. Over the course of the past year, the TPI has risen 10.45% from $2.20 in January 2008. Of the major categories factoring into the TPI, only household goods showed significant movement, falling 11.25% to $2.92. Diesel fuel prices remained level this month but have dropped 30.79% over the past year to $2.27/gallon.

December 2008 TPI Figures Released

The Transportation Price Index (TPI) rose sharply, jumping 23.22% in December to $2.60. It has risen 9.24% from a level of $2.38 in December 2007. The largest movement occurred in the freight category, which also showed a steep increase of nearly 25%, rising to $0.52. Diesel fuel prices slowed their freefall but still dropped 11.49% to $2.31/gallon. Diesel fuel prices have fallen more than 30% since December 2007.

November 2008 TPI Figures Released

The Transportation Price Index (TPI) showed a moderate drop in November, falling 3.65% to $2.11. It has dropped 3.21% over the course of the last year. Diesel fuel prices continued to plummet this month, dropping nearly 20% to $2.61/gallon. This has clearly affected major categories factoring into the TPI, most notably the freight category, which dropped 30% in December.

October 2008 TPI Figures Released

The Transportation Price Index (TPI) dropped 9.5% in October, settling at $2.19. It has risen only slightly from $2.18 in October of last year. Diesel fuel prices plummeted this month, dropping 17.68% to $3.26/gallon. Most major categories factoring into the TPI followed suit, with the boats category showing the most significant drop, falling 17.39% to $0.57.
