I was pleasantly surprised by the most recent census data, which revealed that over 78% of all US businesses were what are called “Single Person Businesses.” Part of why uShip was started was to enable small business owners and, in particular, Owner-Operators to compete with larger companies by giving them access to customers on an open marketplace – and most importantly allowing them to build a reputation through the use of feedback.
Similar companies/technologies (eBay is the obvious example) have played a major role in allowing individuals to create new businesses that may have not possible before, and it’s great to see so many people taking advantage of these tools and resources.
So for anyone that runs a small business who hates always competing against the “big guys,” remember—you are the big guys! Some stats from the census about single person businesses:
- There are over 20 million single person businesses
- These businesses generate over $951 billion in revenue each year
- The average revenue for a single person business is $46,600
