History
In many ways, uShip.com was born in the back of a rented moving van.
In 2001, CEO and Co-founder Matt Chasen was planning to move from Seattle to Austin to attend business school. At the same time, his mother had been struggling for months with trying to ship a family heirloom dresser from Ohio to Texas. The quotes she got from traditional freight companies were too expensive, and while the heirloom had sentimental value, she couldn't justify paying thousands to bring it home.
As Matt's move grew near, he rented a 9 foot van to haul his few belongings down to school When he arrived at the truck rental center, all that was left was a 20 foot truck. Standing in the back of the virtually empty truck, he wondered if there was a similarly empty truck in Ohio with enough room to bring home his mother's dresser.
Matt was sure that there was a way to take advantage of all these empty trucks and travelled miles to make shipping more affordable. Once he arrived at the University of Texas, he joined up with the two other founding members of uShip, Jay Manickam and Mickey Millsap, and started developing the business plan.
uShip.com launched in January of 2003 and since then, has been leading the online shipping revolution.
