The Transportation Price Index (TPI) remained steady in
April, dropping just $0.02 to $2.05 per ton-mile. The TPI is down 3.75% from
its $2.13/TM level in April 2008. The freight category showed the biggest jump,
rising 16.3% to $0.50/TM, followed by the motorcycle category, which rose 9.4%
to $1.40/TM. The cost of shipping household goods dropped 6.9% to $2.71/TM. The
price of diesel fuel has remained fairly level over the past four months and
dropped just $0.02 to $2.20/gallon in April.
The TPI uses proprietary information from actual
transactions taking place on the uShip.com site to provide aggregate and
categorical pricing figures expressed in US dollars per ton-mile. The TPI is
released on a monthly basis and was designed by uShip to track important data
related to transportation costs.
