Hurricane Ike may be long gone, but it’s still wreaking havoc across the South. With
nine major oil refineries still offline in the Texas Gulf Coast, supply lines into Tennessee, Georgia and Florida are running way below capacity. In Atlanta and Tallahassee,
sold out gas stations are commonplace. As gas stations run out of gas, consumers are having to drive longer distances to fill up, further exacerbating the shortage.
Nowhere is the gas shortage worse than in
Nashville, TN. Tennessee has one gas pipeline that goes through Chattanooga. It then splits to terminals in Nashville and Knoxville. Nashville is located at the end of the pipeline. With pipeline capacity so low, there is little gas left in the pipeline once it reaches Nashville. The shortage has led to panic buying, making a bad situation even worse. As production is ramped up in the coming days, the shortage is expected to end soon.
